Austria

Crossing into Austria from Hungary was a breeze. No border just a sign directing us to a change bureau where we could by the compulsory road tax.  It was a straight run from Budapest to Vienna, another city on the banks of the Danube.     We stayed a little way out of town and took the local train into the centre of Vienna every day.               Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Hungary

When we cross the border from Romania to Hungary we’re asked to move over to the side while the officials deal with our passports and the bike’s registration papers. It doesn’t take long before a border guard comes over and says ‘welcome and goodbye’ as he hands the paperwork back to Brian. I change some money and buy the ‘vignette’, a form of road tax. The bike’s rego has to be recorded. The Australian accent is a bit much for the young land filling out the paperwork so we have …

Romania

We trickled up the Black Sea coast from Bulgaria to Constanta in Romania. The weather was awful – cold and wet. By the time we crossed in to Romania after a very simple border crossing the rain had stopped but it was bloody cold when we went for a walk along the boardwalk above the Black Sea.                   We’d hoped to ride the Transfagarasan Highway but it’s closed – covered in snow and ice.
